What does it really mean to live in total surrender to God's will? Suppose God managed a bank that contained one big account with His sons name on it...Jesus Christ...Lord of Lords, Kings of Kings. Let's call it 'Christ's Life Savings Account'.
Now, Suppose that into this one account we could deposit anything and everything that comprises who we are and what we consider to be our property...e.g. Bad behavioral tendencies, good behavioral tendencies, material wealth, memories, emotions, gifts, talents, relationships, money, etc. Whatever we deposit into this account would then become His property and we'd loose our say in how it all gets managed.
Give God Your Life
Now suppose you were to lose your life to Christ by emptying all that you are into this account. This would then effectively place Jesus in charge of everything, free to have His say in all that you do and all that you become. Working with your surrendered life, evidenced by your active willingness to obey God's every command, He could use your fiancés to feed the hungry, your talents to display His wonder and your memories to testify of His nature and will. It would all be up to Him. But do you really have the courage to release your life into Christ's hands?
Whether saved or unsaved you might read this illustration and find yourself asking this question "why should I put God in charge of my entire life?". Keeping this question nestled in the back of your mind, I would encourage you to sit still for a moment and meditate on who God is.
In Him All Things Hold Together
God holds your entire world in his hands. As creator of the universe He not only has your best interests at heart but, thanks to His infinite wisdom, He actually knows with absolute certainty and immaculate precision what will benefit you most. There's no guess work involved when it comes to God. No "let's cover our eyes and just hope this one works out ". God lives outside of time. He sees beyond our every decision. When we mess things up, He knows how to best utilize the situation to bring about His will and purposes. God requires our total surrender, not for the purpose of appeasing His ego (as some may think) but because He knows that it is what is most beneficial for us. He knows that allowing us to take control of our own lives will only end in death and destruction. God alone must be our centre, our focus. "For by Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers, or rulers or authorities; all things were created for Him (Jesus) and through Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together" Collosians 1:16-17.
Seek Gods Will
As Christians, we must be wholly abandoned to God's will. In Mathew 10:39, God's word says that "whoever loses his life for my sake will find it". God desires for us to empty ourselves, turning everything over to Him so that He can then lead us and guide us into living the kind of life he always intended. A life where we grow in relationship with our loving father, learning to trust in Him so that He can in turn trust us with the wisdom and power necessary to bring about His Glory in all the earth. It is this act of trust, where we abandon our own selfish will and turn everything over to Him, that God requires from each of us if we are truly to become one of His disciples.
