The first Europeans who ever saw orchids featured them for being mysteriously beautiful. Back in 15th century Spanish sailors got so engaged with the exotic flower that they brought it back home along with gold and other treasures.
Three hundred years ago Europe experienced what we would call today orchid-boom! The demand for exotic flowers was so high that lots of adventurous guys set forth to the jungles of Brazil, Columbia and Venezuela looking for the new species of the gorgeous blooms. Many of them died of tropical diseases, poisonous snake bites, aggressive natives and other tricks of fortune. Those who made it back with some planting material became famous.
In many countries orchids were considered to have magic power. Thus in New Guinea man would not lie down for a rest next to an orchid in bloom, since they believe it might turn into a beautiful woman and meeting her won’t be for good. Ancient Chinese rested assured that orchids will cast away demons.
In Russia orchids were first welcomed in 19th century when "Sandra" started regular shipments of the blooms to the Tzar family and the aristoi. It was then when first green houses were started to grown orchids. Both the seeds and the gardeners came from abroad.
First World war, October revolution, Civil war, collectivization which implied shared property… Russia forgot all about orchids for the long 100 years. It was not until after the Second World War when the unique collections of the blooms, which used to belong to Gering, were brought to the country and soviet horticultural scientists were able to start growing them again. Since then orchid is one of the favorite Moscow florist ’s flowers.
Today orchids are one of the 10 most valuable species in the world horticultural market and are famous for their unique beauty that lasts. Being so different in shapes and colors the blooms are widely used as potted plants and in flower arrangements. Orchids are easy to grow if you know what you are doing; the only difficulty is that they all require their own conditions. It’s been a while before scientists and armatures figured out which species need what. But thanks to them we can now enjoy the magnificent blooms of orchids through year out.
