Don't Buy a Security Storm Door Until You Read This!

It's easy to think that your storm door isn't very important. It simply something to keep the bugs out when you have the interior door open, right? Not exactly. There are several things to think about when you purchase security storm doors for your home, and some you might not have considered. Here are some tips that can help you choose just the right one.

Types of Security Storm Doors

Depending on your budget, you may be more interested in one type than another. Steel is one of the most common materials used today, but vinyl, wood, and aluminum are available as well. The most expensive are usually those made of wood, but if you're looking for a beautiful piece to accent your home, this could certainly be it! Steel is well known for its strength and vinyl and aluminum are durable and less expensive. Most materials used today allow for painting or they are available in multiple colors.

Sizes and Shapes

Some of today's most common sizes are available in your local home improvement store. If you need a custom size or shape, you'll need to do a little research to see where the best deals are.

Efficiency Ratings

Several of today's new models qualify for a rebate. Before you make your purchase, see if that particular model will qualify and what you need to do to get the rebate. If it doesn't, then check the price for one that does. You might find you'll actually save some money in the long run with one that gets you the rebate.

Hardware Matters, Too

Even some of the more expensive types may not have the right hardware to match your preferences. Many of the higher end models have two closure pistons. However, if this is what raises the price astronomically, remember that a closure piston is only about ten dollars. It's not worth it to pay a hundred dollars or more simply because it has a second closure piston.

The hardware is usually available in a number of different colors, such as bronze, silver, brushed brass, and traditional brass. Again, you may find it's less expensive to purchase the hardware you like separately then to spend a lot more on the door.

In Closing

Security storm doors can add value to your home. However, it's important that you choose one that keeps your family safe, as well. A little bit of research on the different types will go a long ways in finding just the perfect one!
