You may be spending a lot of time in the hospital lately or maybe you have visited a nursing home just recently. There are a lot of people who really serve in these places of health industry or you might be visiting your friend as a patient or maybe someone sick and has been undergoing medical treatments. Again and again, health centers like clinics and hospitals have become full of people and more likely, the personal safety of visitors, patients and the staff should be one of the major concerns. From the Ira Lipman book, about the safety by our self from crime, here is an example : one old man in his early seventies waiting for the treatment in the general hospital on a hernia operation went on to walk around the hospital floor. After the walk when he turn back to the room where he stayed he found that his valuables has been stolen, which includes his wallet as well as his credit cards, his wrist watch and a gold ring, the keys with dentures. On noticed this he immediately report the incident to the staff nurse who in turn summoned the hospital security.
The incident plainly describes that millions of visitors, patients in the hospital and nursing homes, as well as staff experience this next year. With these kinds of setting existing in these health care units and nursing homes, we feel uneasy and we lose some sort of hope and safety. According to research, nursing homes and hospital seem to be unsafe. Most of them operate twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, whole year - which makes it vulnerable to security problems. Mostly, these institutions get huge amount of traffic through the unsupervised and unlocked doors. Since the patients are sick and weak or unable to move, talk or walk - they cannot get help on security and that is why workers also are very much vulnerable. It is also kind of interesting to note that almost ¾ of hospital staff and nursing staff are female - 95% of which have night shift. And you know what? The criminals know this.
What's worse is that you will end up with a very vulnerable environment - much to the delight of the criminals. Patients' personal properties and also of workers, assault on the or even rape can happen! Not to mention thieves and burglars may be on the roll to snatch some drugs or medicines. There can be burglary, robbery or any crime can happen in the area. Most of these can happen on parking lots or garage around the vicinity of a nursing home or hospital.
Researchers say that theft is one of the most common crimes in the world. Data shows that an annual estimate of $2500 gets robbed on each hospital bed. An estimated six billion dollars were lost on an yearly basis as an end result to health care related crimes.
In the end, this means that you need to be aware and observant at all times. Be keen and protect yourself and friends and family who admitted in the hospitals and nursing homes. Even if you are out, make sure that personal protection facilities are installed in the rooms of the patient such as alarm bells and pepper spray for self-defense.
